Business internet

Business internet: what actually differs from a residential plan

The headline speed is rarely the reason a business plan costs more. Uptime commitments, symmetrical capacity, static addressing and support terms are usually where the real difference lies.

Start with what the connection has to support

Before comparing plans, it helps to list what depends on the connection. A small office running cloud accounting software and a handful of video calls has different requirements from a clinic transferring imaging files, a restaurant running card terminals and a reservation system, or a studio uploading large video projects daily.

Two figures usually matter more than peak download speed: the upload capability, and how the connection behaves when several people use it simultaneously. A plan advertising a very high download number with a fraction of that on upload can still feel slow to a team whose work is mostly outbound.

Key differences

Four things business plans usually add

Service level agreements

A business agreement often defines a target uptime percentage and a response window for outages, sometimes with a billing credit if the target is missed. Residential service typically carries no such commitment. If your operation stops when the connection stops, this is usually the single most important difference.

Symmetrical capacity

Business fiber plans commonly provide matching upload and download capability. That matters for VoIP phone systems, video conferencing, cloud backups, point-of-sale synchronisation, and hosting anything on-site.

Static IP addresses

A static IP is generally required for remote access to on-premise systems, VPN endpoints, security camera systems, or mail servers. Residential plans normally provide dynamic addresses that change over time.

Support routing

Business accounts are often routed to a separate support queue with different escalation paths and hours. Confirm what those hours are and whether on-site dispatch is included or billed.

Installation timelines are longer than most people expect

Residential service can often be activated within days. A business fiber installation at a commercial address may require a site survey, building access coordination, landlord approval, and in some cases construction to bring fiber to the property. Timelines of several weeks are common, and occasionally longer where new conduit is needed.

If you are opening a new location, this is worth starting early. It is also worth asking whether a temporary connection can be provisioned while a permanent circuit is being built.

Questions to ask before signing

  1. What uptime target and response window does the agreement commit to?
  2. Are upload and download speeds symmetrical on this circuit?
  3. Is a static IP included, and how many are available?
  4. What is the realistic installation timeline for this address?
  5. Is construction or a site survey required, and who pays for it?
  6. What is the term length, and what happens if we relocate before it ends?
  7. Is a backup or failover connection available?

How we can help

We can review which business service types are listed for your commercial address, explain the practical differences between them, and outline what each provider currently publishes for terms. See our provider guides for network detail, or call to discuss a specific location.

Service availability, download and upload speeds, equipment, installation options, taxes, surcharges, promotional periods, contract terms, early termination policies, and eligibility requirements are set by each provider and vary by service address. Nothing on this website is an offer, quote, or guarantee of service. Review the provider's own terms and current pricing before you enroll.

No cost to compare
